A DRIVER allegedly high on drugs and booze when he fishtailed through a busy Broadbeach intersection has described himself as an “absolute idiot”.

Speaking to media outside Southport Watchhouse on Saturday, Stephen Zelovic of Robina said he was “quite intoxicated” the night police allege he smashed through the Oasis Shopping Centre’s boom gates and fishtailed through the Victoria Ave and Gold Coast Highway intersection just before midnight. But the 23-year-old plasterer denied taking drugs or stealing the car he had allegedly been driving as he celebrated a friend’s 21st birthday.

He added that he couldn’t remember what exactly happened. “I was an idiot and I drank too much. I honestly cannot remember (how much I drank). I should not have been driving. I’m a bloody f-----idiot.”

At Southport Magistrates Court, police alleged Zelovic had taken drug MDMA as well as drinking several jaegerbombs that night.

Police also alleged he tried to evade police by fishtailing through the Broadbeach intersection.

His car allegedly spun a number of times as he lost control before coming to a rest in the opposite direction on a footpath, having narrowly missed other cars and people.

Mr Zelovic is also alleged to have assaulted a police officer.

Police arrested him at Victoria Park where he was later taken to hospital for a blood test and remanded overnight.

He was released on bail on Saturday morning after attending Southport Magistrates Court, charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, receiving tainted property, driving under the influence of liquor and assault police.

As part of his bail conditions Mr Zelovic must report to the Southport police station three times a week, undertake drug testing when required and is on curfew from 8pm until 4am in the morning.

He will return to court on July 27.
