SHOULD Schoolies be downsized? (GCB, 18/7). As a future Schoolies participant, I say most firmly “No!”

I am 17 and in Year 11 on the Gold Coast and ever since I’ve known Schoolies is “a thing”, I have been excited about having my own Schoolies experience.

Even if government infrastructure and support is scaled back, Schoolies will still come to the Gold Coast but the safety of those attending will be compromised.

Also the decline of the Schoolies festivals would diminish their role as an important rite of passage.

One reported suggestion is that the festival time should be cut to, for example, only four days. However,

some adults may not realise that many teenagers are very smart in how they plan their week-long Schoolies experience.

The seven-day experience gives graduates a chance to include a range of healthy activities and not just “party hard” nightly. Thus scaling back the length of Schoolies could jeopardise the safety of the participants who might be tempted to drink and party without a break.

Surfers Paradise is the Schoolies hotspot but it could become a Schoolies dead zone and businesses would suffer.

If the plans being proposed by some politicians and business leaders to downsize Schoolies go ahead, school leavers could soon be going to places like Sydney, Byron Bay and Bali and not the Gold Coast, which would be a real shame.

I appeal to all politicians and business leaders, please don’t mess with our Schoolies. A QUESTION to all readers who cast an opinion on Islam and Muslims. Have you actually read any part of the Koran?

I have some knowledge of quite a number of verses which gives me the basic thrust of the Koran.

So before you approve or disapprove of Islam, I suggest you familiarise yourself with the Koran and then make your assessment. THANK you Gail Wilding (Letters, 18/7), I also think Nina Hardie’s comments (Letters, 14/7) were misleading.

I have been feeding a family of curlews for the last 10 years on bread, cheese and corn beef cut into tiny cubes and they run up to me looking for their little treat.

I feed them when egg laying and little chicks after hatching.

If what Nina said was correct then all ibis, seagulls, crows and magpies would be dead. PETROL price cycle is the greatest con job on Australian public.

What does cycle have to do with price per barrel? I HAVE no problem with gay people choosing a lifestyle that is non– traditional but why then do they demand a traditional wedding?

Why can’t it just be about love? Besides once the tradition of marriage is taken away, where will the law changes end? What about, for instance, the rights of bigamists?
