Boxing kangaroo takes a shot at golfers

- TRENTON AKERS

A GOLD COAST golfer received more than he bargained for when he was set upon by a rogue kangaroo while warming up at a prestigious golf club yesterday.

Before reaching the first tee, the man’s round had taken a turn for the worst after he was attacked on the driving range at the Hope Island Links Golf Club around 8.10am yesterday.

A female golfer in her 50s came to the aid of the man while he was being attacked but was also injured.

Queensland Ambulance acting senior operations supervisor Bill Houghton said the woman received a deep cut to the back of her head and hands as a result of trying to stave off the attack.

“They treated the lady for a deep laceration to the back of the head, which required stitches, and she has since been discharged from hospital. She has sustained non-life threatening injuries,” he said.

“The male didn’t report any injuries to Queensland Ambulance. He was not transported at all.”

The golf club was yesterday in damage control over the rogue animal with a spokeswoman saying the incident had been “exaggerated”.

“The member is fine. The matter is being dealt with privately. We will not be providing any comment,” she said.

Mr Houghton said Queensland Ambulance was encouraging people to be aware of their surroundings, especially while in open spaces.

“We live in a country that is full of wildlife, we’ve got some of the most deadly animals on the planet in Australia,” he said.

“We’ve got snakes, kangaroos, spiders, so just be vigilant of their surroundings and be aware of what is going on around them.”
