A good Cobber one of the Guys

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

ROBBERS Cobber has transformed from a “bugger” of a horse to a potential metropolitan runner with three straight wins to his name under Gold Coast training partners Bryan and Daniel Guy.

The four-year-old raced above his grade to win Saturday’s Divine Prophet Class 3 Handicap (1800m) with jockey Matthew McGuren in the saddle.

It continued a run of success for Robbers Cobber who won at Ipswich and the Gold Coast before responding to a challenge from runner-up Infinite Reign to win again.

“The other horse got ahead of him but he dug deep and at the finish was holding quite well,” Bryan Guy said.

Robbers Cobber joined Guy’s stable earlier this year with a winless record from one preparation but has since found form at his new base.

“Before I got him he was a bit of a handful,” he said.

“He was banned from going to the races over the border. His first up run we gave him he jacked up going into the barriers and it’s just little things he was doing. He was getting hyped up at the races and he was really just a bugger of a horse.

“We spent a bit of time on him, settled him down and now he is terrific.

“He is good to take to the races and you can do anything with him. He just needs looking after. We got his brain right and we got his racing right.”

Bryan Guy said he will continue to take Robbers Cobber through the grades and is considering racing him in a provincial Class 3 on August 19 or a metropolitan meeting the week after – both are at the Gold Coast. “We have got a couple of options,” he said.

“We are putting him through his grades and he is getting better and better.

“Once he finishes this preparation off and goes and has a break we think he will come back a better stayer.”
