SO, RIGHTLY Annastacia has canned the ASF development, because the land has much better use for enviro-tourism purposes.

It was always a public land grab from Queenslanders who own it.

So move on GC business leaders and push for more environmentally sustainable developments over our 60km of coastline and appropriate areas of Hinterland. JIM WILSON NOW the Premier has said “no” to the proposed casino development on The Spit, I urge the GCC Council to consider turning the entire area north of the Sheraton Hotel into the Gold Coast’s own Central Park.

If New York can have a Central Park, then why not us?

The park area should include the entire eastern side of The Spit north of the hotel and the northwestern end of The Spit.

The eastern side needs to be cleared of all the dead trees, the majority of the sand dunes levelled and the entire area grassed over for public recreation and easy access to the beach and ocean.

Following this clean up, add plenty of good shade trees, install toilets, barbecues, hot water outlets, beach showers and life guards.

Then at the southern end of the eastern side and north of the hotel, a soundshell (think Melbourne’s Myer Music Bowl) facing towards the north to allay any noise problems from concerts.

Parking can continue at the northern end and additional parking can be provided along the eastern side of the existing access road.

This entire area must be protected from needless development and saved for the people of the Gold Coast. PETER JOHNSON, ROBINA GOLDEN Girl Betty Cuthbert epitomised what it meant to be a champion; a champion of athletics, a champion of the ordinary Australian and a champion of her nation.

She was admired by international athletes and regarded as a legend of her sport.

A state funeral in Western Australia is a fitting tribute with which to farewell this mighty athlete. KEN JOHNSTON WHY not build a bridge over the Seaway and create a new city on South Stradbroke Island? It’s a fabulous beach with about 15km of beachfront.

Even if you set a maximum height level the money to the city would be incredible, much better than a terminal fraught with danger and shallow water. PETER NORGROVE VERY soon we’ll have a response to the Federal funding request for a rail trail in Murwillumbah.

The politicians will be able to do whatever they want once the corridor becomes Crown land just like the recent decision about the Tumbarumba railway line.

Liberal, Labor and National parties get donations from road companies so they do what their donors want. Build roads and ignore railways as much as possible.

It’s time we all spoke up about this. Ring or write to the relevant politicians to express your views. BETH SHELLEY
