Sally bound for Brisbane ahead of GC Games
QUEENSLAND Athletics are planning for a March 22 meet in Brisbane for Commonwealth Games athletes, which could be a key tune-up race for world champion Sally Pearson.
Australia’s athletes, team management, and major visiting teams will be consulted on which events they most want programmed for the meet at Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre and a second, more low-key meet for open athletes there two nights later.
“We’ll have a 100m hurdles for sure and it might suit Sally to have a race at that stage of her preparation for the Commonwealth Games,’’ QA chief executive David Gynther said.
“The other day (March 24), we would plan to have some events that night, but the day is all about the Little Athletics state titles, when we’ll have 2500 kids competing.
“We’d have some sprints, a 100m hurdles, a discus and probably two long jumps among the events on the 22nd, which we’d want to be a big night for the sport in Queensland with so many athletes getting ready for the Commonwealth Games.”
Gynther said Pearson also generally contests the state titles, which next year will be at QSAC on February 2-4.
But she would most want to compete in the Commonwealth Games test event, the national titles, at Carrara from February 15-18.
Pearson went to Europe for indoor meets last summer, missing the Nitro Athletics competitions in Melbourne.
No athlete from a Commonwealth country other than Pearson made Saturday’s 100m hurdles final.
