HOW THE DAY OF DRAMA UNFOLDED

BE CAREFUL what you wish for.

The Titans trumpeted the recruitment of Jarryd Hayne just over the year ago, not only for their signing of a star player but for the snaring of a brand that would help turn the attention of the sporting public towards the Gold Coast club.

The NRL’s basket case in early 2015 when the league had to rescue them from voluntary administration, the Titans had become a flagship for stability and good governance by the time Hayne joined them just over a year ago.

Luring the cross-code pioneer back to rugby league was a masterstroke by the Titans, who gained publicity and sponsorship they could only previously have dreamed of.

It’s hardly the attention the club wanted when they trumpted the arrival of Hayne, just as the NRL now prepares to sell the Titans to private owners.

There were no winners yesterday. And even when the board reconvenes and resolves how to move forward, the Titans will be left with another black eye.

A club that worked so hard to repair its battered image has again been dragged through the mud.

Only time will tell if the Titans can rise again.
