TSS HOLD HOPES TO RULE SCHOOLS
RUGBY TITLE DREAM REMAINS ALIVE
A LATE flurry of tries brought The Southport School’s Queensland GPS Competition title hopes back from the dead.
TSS were minutes away from crashing out of premiership contention before embarking on a late tryscoring spree to seal a 34-22 win over Nudgee College – their first victory against their rivals since 2012.
In front of a home crowd of several thousand people, TSS only stole the advantage in the closing stages when Koen Dovey, Tyrell Kopua and Tom Vanderschyff all scored in quick succession.
“We scored first but Nudgee were leading for 90 per cent of the game,” said TSS director of rugby Adrian Blundell.
“They had a big lead and we just kept on chipping away at it each time the boys got the ball.
“We were really dominant through the forwards and that just laid the platform.”
Prop Egan Siggs drove that dominance and was rewarded with man of the match honours. He was excellent at throwing the lineouts and also at getting a number of tighthead scrum wins,” Blundell said.
Nudgee had previously been unbeaten but are now in a genuine two-horse race with TSS.
Both teams have a 6-1 record heading into the final round this Saturday, meaning a shared premiership could be on the cards.
TSS have a significantly better for-and-against, +127 to +74, but the silverware is decided solely on wins and losses. TSS next have an away game against Churchie (Anglican Church Grammar School) while Nudgee face Brisbane State High School.
“Everyone looks at the for-and-against but technically it will be a shared premiership if both teams win,” Blundell said.
He added their leadership group are ready to stand up in their final game in school colours.
