GOLD COAST BULLETIN Thursday, April 10, 1986

A CAR stolen in Coolangatta was a key link to the murder of a Brisbane bus driver shot during an attempted holdup.

Police hoped for information from the public about the car, which was stolen from the Rainbow Bay car park.

The Mitsubishi Magna GLX was believed to be used as a getaway vehicle from the Carina bus depot.

Eliseo Furlan, 64, of Eight Mile Plains, was gunned down at point-blank range by a hooded bandit who was robbing the cashier.

Woolloongabba CIB Detective Sergeant Dave Beakey said the car was located by police in bushland off Creek Road, Mt Gravatt East.

Det Sgt Beakey said the car’s discovery was a big breakthrough in the case and its theft could give a good lead to the murderer.

Scientific squad detectives searched the car for finger prints but said there were none which pointed to the killer’s identity.

After checking with the car’s owner, Gold Coast policeman Brian Sheehan said one item of personal property was missing from the car – his police identity card.

Police appealed to the public to examine any police identity cards and check the attached photo.

Police said the car had been driven 500km between being stolen and found.

Earl Shane Clements, 18 at the time of the killing, was found guilty of the murder in 1992 and was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

Clements’ term began in 1996 after he had completed his sentence for another unrelated crime in NSW.
