A Gold Coast woman is in hiding after learning through Facebook that her abusive ex-partner had been released early from jail. The man, who had physically attacked his ex-partner, was not expected to be granted parole until next May. But just seven weeks after being sentenced in March, he was released.

A grieving Darren Mercer broke his silence last night to pay tribute to his daughter, Jordan, following her inspiratio­nal win at the world paddleboar­d championsh­ips in Denmark. The 23-year-old dedicated her victory in the women’s paddleboar­d distance championsh­ip in Copenhagen to her uncle, ironman legend Dean Mercer, who died suddenly on the Gold Coast last week. Darren has privately mourned his 47-year-old brother’s death, but yesterday spoke of his pride for his daughter.

It’s unclear whether the same-sex marriage postal vote will go ahead but the survey is already costing taxpayers millions. The Australian Bureau of Statistics is due to start sending out the surveys next Tuesday, September 12, and has started printing out the materials. While it’s unclear whether these surveys will be sent out – a High Court challenge is being heard now – the cost will still be borne by taxpayers. The spokesman said the ABS would spend about $8 million regardless of what the High Court decides.
