Snakes slithering into homes as weather hots up
SNAKES are on the move as a spike in spring temperatures coincides with breeding season.
Tony Harrison of Gold Coast and Brisbane Snake Catchers said frisky male snakes were being found in odd places across the region.
Yesterday, the experienced snake catcher wrangled a 1.7m eastern brown at an Ormeau property.
“He was very, very chunky,” Mr Harrison said, adding the snake probably weighed close to 3.5kg.
“I put the snake over my hand ... he was as fat as a butcher’s dog.”
Mr Harrison said the deadly reptile was found by the family under an outside tarp which held a number of tools.
The husband had attempted to catch the snake, which he believed to be a carpet python, but it tried to fight back.
“He’d gone to work and the family called up saying it had taken a few swings at him, can you come and remove it,” Mr Harrison said.
“We’re very busy, the guys have been run off their feet.
“(The snake) was icy, icy cold, but if he wasn’t he (the husband) would be in hospital. Don’t try and catch snakes.”
Mr Harrison said the snake was “extremely cold” when he went to catch him and was easy to handle.
But once he’d transported it home it was another story.
“It tried to eat me,” Mr Harrison wrote on Facebook, before telling the Gold Coast Bulletin the snake had warmed up a bit and “told me what he thought about (the ordeal).”
The snake will be sent to Gosford Reptile
Park to be milked for anti-venom.
