Police seek turf vandal
POLICE are considering laying charges against the driver of a car that destroyed a Palm Beach club’s cricket pitch at the weekend.
Palm Beach-Currumbin Cricket Club have made an official complaint to police who are investigating the incident at Salk Oval.
Earlier this week, the Bulletin revealed PBC footballers were caught on Snapchat near the car that did the damage during “out of control” grand final celebrations.
The football club accepted responsibility for the damage.
Palm Beach Police Station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Leanne Major said it was still unclear who was the driver of the car.
“Obviously we have those images but none of those images show the driver,” she said.
“We have to… try to estab- lish who is the driver. We know who owns the car but that doesn’t mean they are the driver.”
She said if police charge a person with wilful damage, the offender could be forced to pay restitution to the club.
“Also in circumstances like this, there’s a possibility of going through a court-ordered mediation process. That’s where the victim and the offender sit down and negotiates with the court as to an outcome that’s suitable to both.”
In a statement released yesterday, a PBC Cricket Club spokesperson said they were working with the footy club.
“Both the Cricket Club and the Snr AFL Club are working together to ensure those responsible for the acts of vandalism are dealt with appropriately,” it read. “The Snr AFL Club has accepted responsibility for the acts and have agreed to repair the damage to the wicket in full.”
