Family shifts Burleigh link

- QUENTIN TOD

A FAMILY that has owned a property in the main shopping street at Burleigh Heads since the 1940s is selling it, complete with a new-age look.

The single-level 15 James St holding is home to a threeshop building in which the tenants include an outlet for US adventure-wear chain Patagonia.

The 405sq m property was bought by Southport retailers Charlie and Norma Reeves in the latter part of the 1940s and at one time had a second level containing flats.

It subsequently has passed down through the family and today is owned by grandsons David Evans, a Brisbane accountant, and brother John, a Melbourne business broker.

Over the past seven decades the property has been home to businesses ranging from a pharmacy to a butchery, a bottleshop and a property agency.

David Evans said a major refurbishment was undertaken last year.

He said the building was stripped back to its original brick and timber shell and rewired and re-plumbed.

An “eye-catching” timber street-front facade was added.

Mr Evans said “add-ons” attached to the rear by various tenants over the years were removed, the building extended, bathrooms added for each tenancy and a grease trap built to cater for future tenancies.

The property has four car parks at the rear.

Michael Willems, of Ray White Commercial, said the work done on the building had turned it into a retail “standout” in James St.

“The chance to buy property in what is Burleigh’s best commercial street doesn’t come along every day,” he said.

“Burleigh is buzzing and the prospect of the light rail arriving in town can only amplify that buzz.”

The 15 James St tenants, apart from Patagonia, are children’s concept clothing store Dragonfly and homewares store Salvage Imports.

Mr Willems said the leases, all with renewal options, had between two and five years to run and the net income was $239,000.

The 15 James St property will be auctioned on October 26.
