EVERYONE’S A WINNER
CHESS is not just a game. It is a wonderful learning opportunity while experiencing fun.
It is an opportunity to develop critical thinking, logical problem solving, patience, strategy and social skills.
Aquinas College hosted the annual Interschool Chess Championships for the Association of Gold Coast Colleges in August, with 100 secondary students competing.
There are many benefits of chess such as challenging yourself, stepping out of your comfort zone, experiencing new and different skills, developing concentration and even the opportunity to win.
Socialisation between games at the championships was impressive. Students communicated with ease and enjoyed making new friends.
Marymount College Year 9 student Cameron Saliba said he really enjoyed the day.
“Meeting and interacting with other like-minded students from a range of schools on the Gold Coast was great,” he said. “I enjoyed the challenge of going into games not knowing the capabilities of the individual that I was pitted against.”
The junior tournament was a close competition, with Marymount College nudging out St Andrew’s Lutheran College by one point.
St Andrew’s also took out the senior division.
“It was an interesting day with so many different schools and learning new techniques,” Aquinas College student Vy Nguyen said.
