Wind, rain bringing grass action

-

THE windy, wet weather is set to continue after the Gold Coast copped a deluge of rain.

In the past 48 hours, more than 200mm of rain has fallen in Upper Springbrook while at least 100mm fell at Currumbin Creek.

And after a dry winter with little grass growth, gardeners across the Coast are keen to get stuck back into trimming back the newly emerged greenery.

“My fortnightly calls have become weekly,” Luke Pridmore, of Quality Gardening Gold Coast, said. “It was dry for three months and slowed right down, now it’s all green ... with the rain and the heat. Then bang, the grass takes off.”

Mr Pridmore said he had to turn new customers away because he was too busy with current demands.

Weatherzone meteorologist Tom Hough expected the Coast to receive up to 40mm of rain this week, half of which would come today.

“It remains pretty gusty the next couple of days, touching on 40km per hour (today) and the mid to low 30km per hour on Wednesday.”

A Gold Coast City Council spokesperson said the larger swell could push some of the sand from deeper waters closer to the beach.

Temperatures were expected to hover around the low 20Cs today.

A spokesman for SEQ Water said the recent rains had boosted the region’s drinking water supply slightly.

The Hinze Dam is sitting around 97.2 per cent capacity.
