I WISH to ask the community for help in making public places safer for people with low or no vision.
A recent survey showed mobile phones are the main cause of distraction resulting in people bumping into, knocking over or even breaking the canes of Queenslanders who are blind or vision impaired while out in their communities.
Almost half of the people who use a cane are bumped into at least once every time they are out.
In almost 60 per cent of cases, these incidences are caused by people engrossed with their phones.
Simple actions like waiting until you reach your destination to check your mobile, or using more caution by slowing your pace and looking up often while walking can help prevent such accidents.
Thank you in advance for keeping your “eyes up” and doing your bit to help all Queenslanders get around their communities safely.

WATCHING our much-needed rain, I was left thinking how our visitors arriving by air felt getting soaked as they left their aircraft and headed to the barn.
With air bridges for domestic travellers a long way off locals and visitors can look forward to being treated as second-class travellers.
No doubt they won’t mind being treated as second-class attendees while their international visitors are treated with air bridges by the time the Games start.

MIDNIGHT Oil frontman Peter Garrett should watch who and what he criticises during his performances (GCB, 17/10).
His time as a cabinet minister was hardly a success with several initiatives failing badly. The schools building program was an expensive fiasco.
Keep burning the Midnight Oil, Pete, as that’s all you are good at.

WITH a state election campaign soon to be announced, a vote for the LNP should be an automatic choice for me.
Then there is its leader Tim Nicholls. He has made so little impact on me, l sometimes forget his full name. As for what he stands for, and how he will shake up the state for everyone’s benefit, l have no clue at all.
It’s not good enough.
