MORE FOR MOSTERT

Ford star Mostert in hunt for silverware

- TOM BOSWELL

AS Chaz Mostert held the Enduro Cup aloft at the Gold Coast 600 his thoughts were squarely on replacing it with the Supercars Championship title after two more rounds.

Mostert and co-driver Steve Owen became the first Ford drivers to win the Enduro Cup yesterday after finishing seventh in the second race of the Gold Coast 600.

“(It feels) pretty good,” Mostert said.

“I didn’t actually realise that Ford hasn’t won it before so it is pretty cool to see those stats. I came close in 2014 with the Bathurst win with Paul (Morris) and then came second in the Enduro Cup that year.

“It’s pretty cool to get a cup but in saying that we all want the one at the end of the year.”

Mostert was the premier driver across the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600 – the three events that make up the Enduro Cup series.

The 25-year-old finished third at Sandown, 10th at Bathurst and first and seventh at the Gold Coast to secure the title.

Mostert said yesterday’s race was by no means perfect due to some pit issues but he remains in the hunt for the Supercars Championship.

The Prodrive Racing Australia driver holds fourth in the series, 126 points behind leader Jamie Whincup.

“You have got to just take these races as they come and put your best foot forward, try to get trophies and be consistent at doing that as well,” Mostert said.

“I am pretty happy with our car this year, it has been little ups and downs but it has definitely been a good turnaround from where we were last year.

“We are definitely further back than what we would like to be going into the last two sprint rounds but as you can see through Bathurst and these races here, the weather conditions or bad luck can come into anyone’s things. Everyone has had several bad races this year.

“I’m sure that between all of us there is some more bad ones to come before the end of the year. You never want to hope on that kind of stuff, you have just got to do the best job you can and your team has got to do the best job they can.

“We’ll get to Sunday night in Newcastle and someone will be holding the cup.

“They will have done an awesome year to do it and then the other four or five guys around are thinking about how they can try to get on top of them next year.”
