HOW FAR WE’VE COME SINCE THE WIN AT ST KITTS

- PETER BEATTIE

CAN you believe this Saturday marks six years to the day from when the Gold Coast was announced as host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games?

On November 11, 2011 on the island of St Kitts in the Caribbean, outgoing Commonwealth Games President Michael Fennell said those momentous words “Gold Coast”.

His statesman-like pronouncement would begin a new future for the City of Gold Coast, filling us all with excitement, aspiration and community pride.

Six years ago there was a vision and a plan. Today it is becoming very real.

We are witnessing the Games come to life before our very eyes.

Next weekend is a great example when we launch our workforce training journey in a massive orientation event at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre for thousands of our staff, volunteers and contractors.

It will be one of the largest pre-Games events that we will stage here on the Gold Coast. We have had an overwhelming response from our team about this event – excited to either begin or continue their training journey as well as being there to witness the unveiling of our workforce brand and highly anticipated workforce uniform.

I know that everyone who is lucky enough to wear one will wear it well and with enormous pride.

They will be looking great as they Share the Dream of GC2018 with the world.
