In-form Cougars up for Hurricanes challenge

- RHYS O’NEILL

CARRARA Cougars’ open team is set for its biggest Gold Coast Tennis League challenge yet, with Hinterland Hurricanes next on the menu.

The powerful Cougars kept their perfect start to the sixclub league intact at the weekend by crushing Beenleigh Blaze 70-30 and 47-29 across seniors and juniors respectively. The Hurricanes went down narrowly to Gold Coast Giants yet maintained third spot on the open ladder after two rounds.

It sets the scene for this weekend’s battle, with Beenleigh Tennis as hosts.

The Giants remain the leaders in the under-16 junior competition ahead of the Cougars and Hurricanes.

In its third year, the GCTL features not only each clubs marquee players and teams but also for the first time their top juniors in the under-16s competition.

“With modified rules, a shortened format and some of the finest Gold Coast players all taking to the court at the one venue, each round of tennis displays the best the game has to offer,” Tennis Queensland participation manager Alexa Lloyd said.

“Players love the team environment after the Australia Pro Tour swing in which they have to fend for themselves.”

Teams play across singles, doubles and mixed doubles rubbers for five rounds, after which the two top ranked sides will compete in a grand final.

The winners of the junior and premier divisions will battle the winners of the Northern Tennis League, Brisbane Tennis League and Sunshine Coast League in the state final.
