COCK-A-HOOP DEANNE RUNS RINGS AROUND FITNESS FANATICS

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND amanda.robbemond@news.com.au

TEN years ago Deanne Love quit her job to become a professional hula hoop teacher.

That’s right, a hula hoop teacher.

The 40-year-old travelled to Los Angeles and California to learn about “hooping” – and within two years it was her bread winner.

“I started in Japan and quit my career as a primary school teacher. It was crazy at the time,” she said.

Ms Love, 40, teaches hooping to people all over the world via YouTube.

She said work started to take off when she held classes in Melbourne in 2011.

Last year she came to the Gold Coast permanently in the hope she could get this city on board as well.

“It brings that fitness element which is embraced on the Gold Coast,” Ms Love, of Coolangatta, said. “It’s about community building.”

She said she first got into the sport when she was looking for something interesting to add to her lifestyle.

“It’s a myth to think it’s just (hooping) on your waist.

“There are tricks you can do on your body and off, and you can use multiple hoops.”

On Sunday, November 19, Ms Love will host the Biggest Hoop Workout at Palm Beach. More than 200 people are expected to attend the event, which includes a yoga class, hoop lessons, a show and workouts.

The event begins at 8am.
