DAY HELPS EASE JAKE’S INJURY PAIN

- DEAN RITCHIE

JAKE Trbojevic has missed the Rugby League World Cup but he got to meet a world superstar.

Sometimes a positive springs from a negative.

Injured Manly forward Trbojevic yesterday lived out a dream – to meet and learn from former world No.1 golfer Jason Day.

Trbojevic should have been in Brisbane preparing for Australia’s World Cup semi-final against Fiji on Friday but was injured in the tournament’s opening round.

The injury allowed Trbojevic to be in Sydney where he walked nine holes with Day, a former Beaudesert boy who is a keen rugby league fan.

Trbojevic met Day before a practice round at The Australian course. Day was preparing for the Australian Open, which starts on Thursday, a tournament which will include American superstar Jordan Spieth.

Trbojevic is a super-keen golfer who plays off 14 at Wakehurst and Mona Vale courses in Sydney’s north.

“I walked with Jason over the front nine – it was mad, it was awesome,” he said.

“Because it was a practice round, there weren’t people there at all.

“They just smash it – they hit it so long. We all had a chat, everyone was pretty relaxed.

“It was a great experience to be up so close – it’s something I will remember for a long time. It was cool.

“Jason talked a little bit about rugby league.”

Trbojevic couldn’t actually play with Day yesterday due to his pectoral injury.

He has had surgery and is expected back for Manly by Round 1 next season.
