Coast pair in hunt for more awards

THEY were already in the running to be named the ABC Sports Personality of the Year but Gold Coasters Curtis McGrath and Sally Pearson are in line for more gongs at the AIS Sport Performance Awards next month.

While the Sports Personality of the Year will be determined by a public vote, a panel of experts from the Australian Institute of Sport has determined finalists in several other categories, with several Gold Coasters in the running.

Pearson has been nominated for female athlete of the year, with McGrath named as a finalist for male athlete of the year as well as para performance of the year after defending his pair of canoeing world titles.

Triathlete Matt Hauser, named in Australia’s Commonwealth Games team last week, is among nominees for the emerging athlete of the year, while McGrath’s coach Andrea King is among nominees for the coach of the year.

Titans board member Lynne Anderson, the Australian Paralympic Committee boss, is among nominees for the award for leadership.

The awards will be presented at a gala ceremony at The Star, Sydney, on December 12.
