Walters to take attacking reins

-

QUEENSLAND coach Kevin Walters will be given the keys to Brisbane’s attacking machine to drive Anthony Milford and help break the club’s title drought.

Coach Wayne Bennett will overhaul the Broncos next season, with assistant Jason Demetriou – who was in the running for the Titans post – to be shifted from running the offence to controlling defence.

Respected by Broncos players, there is a view Walters could take Milford to another level after working closely with the pivot and former halves partner Ben Hunt two years ago – the last time the Broncos qualified for the NRL grand final.

Bennett said the strategic shift was not a kick in the guts for Demetriou, whom he rated among the NRL’s most promising young coaches.

“Kevvie will be running our attack next year,” Bennett said.

“JD (Demetriou) will be working with our defence.

“I was really happy with the job JD did with our attack this year and I offered him the chance to do it again.

“Kevvie was more keen to run the attack. I said, ‘That’s fine, if you can’t work it out, I will tell you what you are going to do’, so they’ve sorted it out.”
