Campaign brings city poll gold
THE Gold Coast will get a new M1, 50 new cops, planning for a northern hospital and cheaper power bills – under commitments made to the Bulletin’s Going for Gold campaign.
The Bulletin asked the major political parties to give commitments on five key issues ahead of the November 25 poll – police, health, cost of living, tourism and transport.
In 20 days of reports, the newspaper illustrated an infrastructure deficit which would leave the city with an economic hangover after the Commonwealth Games in April.
The campaign documented the peak-hour rush on the M1 and data showing how emergency department and maternity wards could not cope with record presentations.
Case studies showed the shocking impact of skyrocketing power bills on small businesses and older residents.
