POLICE
COMMITMENT: The city has some of the worst crime statistics in the State. Coast MPs, the Police Union and cops on the beat agree say 50 extra police is the solution. Will you deliver?
LNP: The LNP will recruit more than 50 police for the Gold Coast district as part of our election promise to hire an additional 535 police over three years.
LABOR: The Palaszczuk Government recently announced funding for 400 new police officers, including 44 new frontline officers for the Gold Coast.
COMMITMENT: Coomera police station should have district status, giving its senior officers the power to deal with the crime wave in the north. Will you agree to that?
LNP: We are happy to consider additional efforts to give local police the tools they need in the fightback against crime on the northern Gold Coast.
LABOR: The police in Coomera division are operational — they are on the road fighting crime and making the community safer. If Coomera was to be turned back into a district, police would be taken off the road to service the administrative overhead that goes with being a district.
COMMITMENT: Correctives Services needs more resourcing, the population in jails is at 120 per cent. Will you commit to programs to stop youths from reoffending?
LNP: The LNP has announced two policies to reduce reoffending and break the cycle of crime. An important part of our law and order plan is about rehabilitating offenders to reduce their chances of committing crime.
LABOR: The Palaszczuk Government is building a youth justice system to address the cause of offending, ensure young people are held responsible for their behaviour, and to draw on the positive benefits of rehabilitation to build stronger communities.
COMMITMENT: At least two new bikie gangs have formed chapters on the Gold Coast. What will you do to ensure clubhouses remain closed and bikies cannot wear colours and meet on the street? LNP: The LNP will reintroduce the tough laws to ensure that bikie clubhouses remain closed and that anti-association laws are in place to protect the community.
LABOR: The Palaszczuk Government has brought in the most robust and workable serious organised crime laws in Australia and they are working. We are the envy of other jurisdictions.
