Call to scan pedophile’s own cases

THE Department of Justice is being urged to scrutinise child sex cases presided over by former magistrate and convicted pedophile William Randall.

Randall, 69, was jailed for nine years this week on 18 child sex charges related to the horrific abuse of a boy over 12 years while he was a sitting magistrate.

Child protection advocate Hetty Johnston said it was “common sense” for the department to review the cases Randall presided over.

Randall, who was a magistrate between 1985 and 2008 in Brisbane and Goondiwindi, was slammed by Judge Catherine Muir for his hypocrisy in abusing the boy “while sitting in judgment of others”.

A spokeswoman for the state’s Chief Magistrate, Judge Ray Rinaudo, said there was no review on foot and it was unlikely Randall sentenced anyone for child sexual offences as most cases were heard in the District Court.

But he may have dealt with committal hearings and bail applications between 1985 and 1995, after which he presided over small claims exclusively.

Criminal lawyer Bill Potts said a review was unlikely, given the passage of time.
