FIELD OF DREAMS: COAST CRICKETER TEAMS UP WITH AUSSIES IN ASHES
Coast cricketer Matt Kuhnemann enjoys best seat at Ashes Test
NO one had a better seat in the house for the highly anticipated opening day of the 2017-18 Ashes series than emerging Gold Coast spinner Matt Kuhnemann.
The 21-year-old is quickly becoming a “veteran” of Test cricket in Brisbane, having been called up as a substitute fielder for Australia for the second straight year at the Gabba.
Kuhnemann joined former Queensland captain Jason Floros and Norths allrounder Nathan McSweeney in a three-man substitute fielding brigade as injury clouds hovered over batsmen David Warner and Shaun Marsh.
The chance comes after Kuhnemann was around the national camp as 12th man for Australia’s day-night Test against Pakistan in December.
Kuhnemann is one of the brightest rising talents on the Coast, having strung together several quality campaigns at Queensland Premier Cricket level in recent years.
He has been using his time with the Australian team to pick Nathan Lyon’s brain on spin bowling.
Kuhnemann thinks he could be on the field for Australia today.
“I’m real keen to get out there. Even just with the warm-ups, I’m the first one out there and the last one to leave.
“Just to be out there in the middle of the Gabba, the atmosphere is unreal.”
Kuhnemann will take a break from his national duties tomorrow to play club cricket for the Gold Coast Dolphins.
