Big win not enough for Matildas

-

IT says a lot about where the Matildas are at – and where they want to be – that no one in the national team camp is satisfied with their 5-1 defeat of China.

Alen Stajcic’s side romped to victory in the second game of their two-match series yesterday in Geelong, after a 3-0 win on Wednesday at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

The coach’s demeanour after the win – their seventh in a row – was more akin to a defeat.

“I don’t think was our best performance this year,” he said. “The scoreboard was a little bit flattering.

“It certainly shows our potency in attack and counterattack and at set pieces but I thought we were a bit disjointed and there were a few too many turnovers for my liking.

“We probably played a fiveout-of-10 game and to win 5-1 ... it’s a good sign (that) you can be at half-capacity and still be able to beat a top Asian contender by that scoreline.”

Superstar striker Sam Kerr, who added a double to take her recent Matildas tally to 11 goals in six games, agreed with her coach.

“That’s the sort of team we want to be, (to be able to) play not our best football and still win,” she said.
