No award for actor’s roof climb

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

A PROMISING Gold Coast actor and a young teacher yesterday pleaded guilty to highrisk activity after scaling the outside of The Envy Hotel at Broadbeach last month.

Appearing separately in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday Cantona Joseph Stewart, 21, and Robert Terence Williams, 22, were given good behaviour bonds following a night out in October.

Mr Stewart, an aspiring actor, decided to climb onto the the roof of the building after midnight, passing through a staff-only exit door to the outside, scaling two flights of stairs and an airconditioning unit and leaping across a gap between buildings before disappearing on the roof.

The court heard that when police arrived at Mr Stewart’s home on November 12 he gave a full admission to his actions stating he had made a wrong decision while intoxicated.

Mr Stewart’s lawyer said Mr Stewart had been in a number of movies filmed on the Coast and wanted to move to the US.

Magistrate Mark Howden said: “I’m told you maybe have a future in the film industry ... The last thing you’d want is a conviction on your record if you want to go to America.”

Mr Stewart was given a $800 12-month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.

Mr Howden said Mr Williams actions were different.

“The co-offender got up onto the airconditioning unit to coax him down,” Mr Howden said.

Mr Williams, who will begin a full-time teaching role next year, was given a $500 12month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.
