Year 12 Aquinas College
AQUINAS College students are known for their artistic flair and this year the annual photography competition entries did not disappoint.
The submissions from the students and staff covered many topics ranging from small children and pets to landscapes and action shots.
With more than 150 entries, it wasn’t an easy task for the judges to pick a handful of winners. One of the judges, Suzanne Payne, an artist who works in many mediums including textiles and jewellery design, commented on the high standard of photographs presented.
“The variety and depth of work presented was very impressive,” she said.
“It was very difficult to select the prize winners with so many quality photographs.”
The photograph of a burning truck in Zanzibar caught the eye of the judges for its peculiar subject matter and the fact that the student was able to capture the photograph while driving past.
This photograph, taken by Lilly-Rose Hunady, was selected as the winner of the Year 8 section of the competition.
“While touring Zanzibar, we came across a car with several gas bottles at the back that burst into large black flames and spread rapidly,” she said.
“Everyone began to surround the car and caused a huge traffic jam. While we drove past quickly, I took several shots with my camera and did not realise I had taken this photo until later. I couldn’t believe how I was in the right place at the right time.
“At the presentation ceremony, the announcement of my name was a huge relief and very exciting and I was so proud. Everyone was clapping for me and I couldn’t believe it.”
