THE QUESTIONS THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT ANSWER
Our questions to Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones, State Development Minister Anthony Lynham and Housing Minister Mick de Brenni:
1. Grocon’s subcontractors to the Parklands project have been told the athletes village is not a Government project. How is that so?
2. If it is not a Government project, why were subcontractors required to sign contracts saying that design, timelines and other specifications were subject to approval from the Minister for Economic Development?
3. Even if the apartments were not directly funded by the Government, it is clear they were built because the Government needed them for the athletes village, that the Government had taken every opportunity for good publicity over its completion and that the Government facilitated the project in every way, including providing the land. What will the Government do to ensure all subcontractors are paid? 4. Who authorised, and why, the $14 million payment to Grocon at handover?
Response via unattributed
Government statement: We continue to investigate all the options to resolve the situation. At the request of Grocon, the State has made payments directly to some subcontractors for works they have undertaken on State Government-funded aspects of the project, such as roads, pathways and gardens. However, the subcontractor payments for the private development remain Grocon’s responsibility. Government is doing everything in its power to hold Grocon to account.
