Result appeal

DJR Team Penske have upped the ante in trying to clear their star driver Scott McLaughlin of a costly error in the title-deciding Supercars race.

McLaughlin was on track to win the championship, leading the last race of the season in Newcastle on November 26 until being slapped with a drive-through penalty for speeding in pit lane.

That sanction dropped the No.17 driver down the field, from where he battled to recover ground to reach the 11th place finish he needed to seal his maiden crown.

Two further penalties for his involvement in collisions crushed that dream.

While his Stapylton-based team have accepted the race and title result won’t change, they have now officially challenged Supercars regarding the controversial pit lane speeding penalty.

“According to the team’s analysis of multiple different data/video feeds, Scott didn’t exceed the 40km/h speed limit at any point in pit lane,” a statement from the team read.

“Members of Supercars technical staff have agreed to attend a meeting at the DJR Team Penske workshop on Monday, 11 December to review the incident with the team’s technical staff.

“DJR Team Penske accepts that the outcome of the championship cannot be altered but the team feels it has a responsibility to seek clarity and to ensure the methods used to enforce pit lane speed limits going forward are as accurate as possible for all competitors.”

McLaughlin’s teammate Fabian Coulthard was also penalised for pit lane speeding during the same race, before the Gold Coaster was forced to stop his car with mechanical problems.

McLaughlin and Coulthard finished second and third, respectively, in the overall points to wrap up the teams’ title.
