Titans under-20s graduate’s fighting chance

APIATA Noema’s next few training sessions could make or break his NRL career.

The 2017 Gold Coast under-20 co-captain is fighting to extend his six-week trainand-trial opportunity into a post-Christmas block including NRL trial matches.

The Titans have handed 2018 development contracts to three players – Kiah Cooper, Alexander Brimson and Tony Matautia – with Noema and fellow 20 graduate Moeaki Fotuaika on temporary deals.

Noema knows all about the importance of winning over coach Garth Brennan.

“I have got to put my best foot forward and turn up every day and do my job,” he said.

“This being my first preseason with the top side, I feel like you have to step up that second notch and going into second gear I do feel a lot physically and mentally stronger at the same time.”

With the pressure on, the second-rower has found particular support from veteran teammate Kevin Proctor.

“He has been a big pick up for me, putting a smile on my face and making me laugh and showing me positive vibes and at the end of the day that’s what you need through a tough time,” Noema said.

“He is a pretty established player and a lot of the young boys do look up to him.”

New Zealand-born Noema is aligned to Gold Coast feeder club Burleigh. He began playing for the Bears in under-12s before being snapped up by the Titans.
