Tide turning for Cody with next wave on way

AS his new EP ably demonstrates, the tide has turned for US-based Gold Coast singer and songwriter Cody Simpson’s musical career.

A taste of what’s to come in 2018 from Simpson and his ace new outfit, The Tide, the four new songs on Wave One sound like old favourites from first listen.

Simpson, who produced and recorded the EP at studios in Santa Monica, Newport Beach and Hollywood, said he’d been working towards Tide his entire career.

“The reason behind the name was I wanted this body of work to be an audio replication of what the tide is as an the element of nature,” he said.

“We wanted to begin just with four tracks as a good introduction to what we’re doing as a band. We have 20 or 30 songs pretty much completed.

“I do believe we’ve held our best stuff back for an album.”

The “we” he’s referring to is Cody Simpson & The Tide, the impressive trio he’s formed with Shareef Addo on bass and Adrian Cota on drums.

“The guys I play with are such highly skilled musos,” Simpson said. “They both went to Berklee College of Music, in Boston (the world’s largest independent college of contemporary music).”

Simpson met Cota – “he’s a prominent jazz prodigy here in the States” – two years ago before they teamed up and eventually ‘stole’ Addo from blues-hued duo Aer.

“The EP is a great first stepping stone into establishing and introducing ourselves as a band,” Simpson said.

The ocean has been a constant throughout Simpson’s career, with the keen surfer and former swimming champion exploring his relationship with it in lyrics and videos.
