Precinct for food trucks

Burleigh Common a pop-up village

- EMILY SELLECK emily.selleck@news.com.au

A COMMUNITY space that’s set to become a melting pot of latte-drinking hipsters, entrepreneurs and food truck fanatics has opened in West Burleigh.

The brainchild of Gold Coast foodie trailblazers Christian and Sandra Vaughan of Baracca, Burleigh Common was built in less than two weeks inside an old warehouse space.

But the concept has been in the works much longer.

“We’ve had the idea for a couple of years but have been waiting for the right space,” Mr Vaughan said.

“It’s a place where people can come to sell things whether it be artwork or furniture, there will be a rotation of food trucks coming in each day, there’s Blackboard Coffee and free Wi-Fi so people can come in with their laptops to get some work done.

“We saw so many passionate creatives trying to make a living selling at the markets (and) it’s a really hard slog trying to eke out a business for yourself.”

Mr Vaughan said this inspired them to set up a pop-up-style shop space.

“It’s a great pop-up retail space for businesses that can’t afford a shop,” he said.

“I think we’re also going to bring people together over food ... the Gold Coast loves food trucks.

“We’re trying to tap into the village community vibe, we’re only a hop, skip and jump away from James St.”

Mr Vaughan said he was “only limited by his imagination” and wanted to hear suggestions from locals on other ways the space could be used.

“It’s a working community space that’s here to be used ... it’s not a library,” he said.

“There are some great warehouse spaces like this in Melbourne and Sydney and there was one on the Gold Coast ... we’ve had a great turnout so far, there’s been a lot of excitement around it.”

Burleigh Common is open 7 days a week from 7am to 2pm.
