Solomon happy with call on top job

- TOM BOSWELL

SUNS assistant Dean Solomon says he is content with his decision not to apply for the senior coaching job, believing the club needed an outside source to inspire success.

Solomon was the interim coach of the Suns for the final three games of the 2017 season following Rodney Eade’s sacking. The former Essendon premiership player was mulling over whether or not to put his hand up for the then vacant role that was eventually filled by former Sydney Swans assistant Stuart Dew.

Solomon – who has been at the Suns since their inception in to the AFL in 2011 – said he decided against becoming a senior coach for the first time because he felt the club required a fresh face.

“It was probably a culmination of things,” he said.

“I was just sitting back and getting some fresh air, absorbing it and taking it all in.

“I really enjoyed my time as interim coach.

“I just felt with some really strong conversations with guys around the club that they probably needed to get someone from outside the club.

“I have been here from the start so I felt personally it would be a hard appointment for the club to make so I was really supportive of getting someone from outside.”
