‘Jewel in the crown’ for Bond rugby

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

BOND University will in April unveil a stunning new sevenfigure clubhouse as the “jewel in the crown” of their rugby overhaul.

The Robina campus is on track to raise $1 million for the project after securing the Fay family as lead donors.

The clubhouse will be named after the late Fabian Fay, who helped found the Nerang Bulls and Gold Coast Breakers and acted as Gold Coast District Rugby Union president before passing away in 2005. He also had been general manager at Sea World.

His legacy has been carried forward by wife Virginia and their three children Roscoe, Fiamma and Sam.

The works, which have already begun, will increase the precinct’s capacity from 1500 to nearly 4000.

Bond executive director of sport Garry Nucifora said the development of the boutique arena comes after the club’s focus on performance as well as attracting high-profile competition games, including the NRC and Oceania under-20s.

“It takes us from being pretty much a park footy club to a serious club,” Nucifora said.

“We now have a vantage point from which to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

“It would have been easy to perhaps just do the cosmetics first and then worry about the performance and the programs but I think we have done it the right way.”

Bond are expected to officially open the clubhouse at their Round 4 home game against Easts on April 21.
