Forster pulls right rein on race for Weinholt

- MARK OBERHARDT

STAKES performer Weinholt will tackle the Buffering Quality at Doomben on Saturday after his trainer Desleigh Forster correctly predicted the track conditions would be against him at the Gold Coast.

Weinholt has been twice placed in black-type races in Brisbane and looked well placed in the Benchmark 90 race at the Gold Coast last Saturday.

However Forster didn’t accept when she thought the Aquis Park track would be too hard.

“As it turned out it was the right call. The track went from a good four to a firm two and was far too hard for Weinholt,” Forster said.

“It would have been a waste of time running him.”

Weinholt was trained early in his career by Peter Moody and won six races in Victoria and NSW.

The gelding is owned by leading Queensland breeder Basil Nolan and his family who last year decided the sevenyear-old would be better suited to Queensland racing.

Weinholt ran third in the 2016 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes and 2016 Listed Falvelon Stakes at Doomben before returning south for a short but unsuccessful Melbourne stint.

He has been back in Queensland for five months and after trialling at Doomben in November was fourth firstup behind Le Chef at the Sunshine Coast on November 28.

“He has had a month to get over the run and he will be better at the 1350 metres on Saturday,” Forster said.

“And he looks well off under the set weights and penalties conditions.”
