BATON ARRIVAL CHANGES PACE FOR OUR EVENT
THE Queen’s Baton is back on Australian shores safe and sound after its historymaking 288-day journey around the globe where it was carried by people from the other 69 Commonwealth nations in the most famous and remote locations on Earth.
Much like what happened when the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games baton and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games torch arrived back home from their respective journeys, the GC2018 Baton’s arrival at Brisbane Airport last Sunday morning sent a powerful message that it’s now ‘game on’.
As it starts its 100-day domestic journey, at GOLDOC it’s time to focus our attention on delivering the results of seven years of planning, problem solving and sheer hard work by thousands of people as our city and State get ready to experience a festival of sport and culture never seen before.
When we return from the Christmas-New Year break next Tuesday it’s ‘all systems go’ to the April 4 Opening Ceremony and the 11 days of world-class sport and arts and cultural festival action.
I for one can’t wait. Almost immediately you’ll see venue fit outs begin right across the city, such as the temporary Beach Volleyball stadium at Queen Elizabeth Park at Coolangatta which begins on January 8 and the bump-in of temporary seats and supporting infrastructure at many others.
