No proof Hinterland cable car would damage environment

- DR ROGER BURGESS, CURRUMBIN WATERS

MAYOR Tom Tate is to be commended for his vision of a dive site using an effete naval vessel. No brainer.

What is also needed is a cableway to our beautiful Hinterland, continuously stymied by Lois Levy and her Gecko cronies. They have never given me a plausible, repeat plausible, scientific reason for their opposition to such a project.

Lois, please take note of the following cableways around the world, where there has been no scientifically proven damage to the markedly varied environments in which these have been embedded. These include:

1. Our own Kuranda Rainforest Cableway having absolutely no scientifically proven effect on the subjacent rainforest.

2. South Africa’s Skeleton Gorge climbing 764m to Table Mountain through unique rainforest.

3. Bolivia: from capita La Paz (altitude 3660m) to El Alto, higher still!

4/5. Rio de Janeiro: there are actually two cableways here Lois.

6. Ba Na, Vietnam: one of the world’s longest single cable ride through their unique rainforests! Another is planned.

7. Mount Stanshorn, Switzerland. Has an incredible open upper deck with an eagle’s view of their mountains.

8. Merida, Venezuela: also one of the world’s longest and highest rides.

9. Genting Highlands: yes heaps more rainforest Lois.

10. Klein Matterhorn, Switzerland: very fragile alpine environment, as most are.

11. Banff, Canada: more unique flora and fauna, wave to the bears.

12. Hong Kong: Ngong Ping cableway with wonderful views across Lantau Island.

13. Wales: Llanudo Cable Car,

14. (Ben) Nevis Range cable car, Scotland: Unique heather et alii.

15. The Needles Chairlift, Isle of Wight.

18. Heights of Abraham, Peak District, Derbyshire: wildflowers.

19. London: Emirates have built one that crosses the Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks.

Come on Lois, prove to me your assertion that such a cableway would produce unsustainable damage to our unique environment. Happy New Year to you and Gecko.
