Games legacy well worth disruption

- TERRY WILSON

AS far as Gold Coast Hockey is concerned the inconveniences caused by the Commonwealth Games will be worth it.

The local association had to deal with Games preparations late last year and will have competitions disrupted in April.

Pre-Games work kept most local clubs away from the main centre at Keith Hunt Park.

“But the legacy for us will be when the Games are finished, and the local hockey fraternity is extremely happy about that,” association president Paul Gasmier said.

“Last year we had a disrupted season and it looks like it’ll be the same again this time.

“The Games work had a flowon effect while we were waiting for delivery of the facility.

“We had a ground at Runaway Bay and the only other ones were over the border in the Tweed and Murwillumbah.”

Officials are working on an early February start for the Coast competitions but things should be back to normal after a break of two or three weeks for the Games.

There are about 1200 registered players in local clubs with junior grades in under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 as well as six men’s and women’s teams.

The clubs are Burleigh, Roosters, Mudgeeraba, Labrador, All Stars (men), Capri and Logan (women).
