WHAT THE LAW SAYS
IN Queensland, animals are protected under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.
The maximum imprisonment under the Act is three years for animal cruelty, or one year for breaching duty of care.
However, under s. 242 of the Criminal Code 1899 (Qld) offenders can receive up to seven years in jail for serious animal cruelty.
The maximum fine allowable is $235,600 for a person or $1.178 million for a corporation.
