‘Hammer’ on form for title

- PHILIP DILLON

ANDY Hamilton hopes his win over Western Australia’s Lewis Kirk in the inaugural Pro Darts Showdown Series last night will be the first of many as the series kicked off in Brisbane.

A raucous crowd at the RNA Convention Centre cheered on the man they call “The Hammer” as the former world championship runnerup took the first match 6-1.

The 50-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent, England, also became the first player to throw a maximum 180 and he was also close to six perfect darts in the final leg of the game before finally finishing on double two.

“It was tough being the first one on stage,” Hamilton said. “It will be tough for all the pros up against these young Aussies, so there is a bit of pressure on.

“I have done it now and it’s now up to the others.

“It’s all about performing. It was proved tonight.”

Hamilton said it didn’t matter who he took on in the quarter-finals as long as he was playing well.

“If I do that then I have a good chance,” he said.

“I don’t have to focus on their game, I just have worry about what I do.”

Tasmania’s Rhys Mathewson produced the first shock of the night defeating American No.1 John Kuczynski 6-3 in the second match on show.

The Aussie paid tribute to the Brisbane supporters after winning through to the last eight tonight.

“They were probably what got me over the line,” he said.
