‘Selfless’ owners lead by example

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

IF success starts at the top, then the Titans are ideally placed, according to new chairman Dennis Watt.

A consortium spearheaded by Rebecca Frizelle and Darryl Kelly last month officially bought the Gold Coast licence from the NRL and Watt believes you couldn’t ask for better head honchos.

“They have very much a holistic view of success and of taking the Gold Coast region with them,” Watt said.

“It’s not about them. They are entirely selfless in terms of their commitment to the club for the sake of the club, the game and the community.

“They’re in it for the right reasons.”

Watt shares a view with both Frizelle and Kelly that league can be a catalyst for positive change in the city.

“Like me, they believe in the power of the game to inspire and to change lives for the better,” he said.

“As Darryl Kelly says, rugby league is at the front line of many of society’s greatest challenges. Rugby league and the Titans can be a force for good in those areas.”

He added it is “laughable” to suggest that the Coast can’t experience and sustain success.

“They (the owners) have got great faith in the ability of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales to excel at the highest level as many individuals have done in business and in sport,” Watt said.

“Many of the country’s most successful people live here.

“There is a spirit of independence, innovation and entrepreneurship which sets the Coast apart.”
