SPY A SHY PLATYPUS
Sit quietly beside the crystal-clear creek of the Lower Portals pools and keep an eye out for some tell-tale bubbles … you might just see a wild platypus. But if you don’t have any luck there, turn your eyes to the sky to see if you can spot the endangered Coxen’s fig-parrot. Also known as the bluebrowed, red-faced or southern fig parrot or lorilet, it is one of the smallest and least known parrots in Australia. A highly endangered subspecies of the double-eyed fig parrot, it’s fairly safe to say you may need an ornithologist on hand.
