D’Ath defends decision
QUEENSLAND AttorneyGeneral Yvette D’Ath has defended the state government’s decision not to lodge an appeal for a tougher prison sentence for child killer Heidi Strbak.
Strbak, 34, will be eligible for parole four years after she was sentenced in November to nine years’ jail over the manslaughter of son Tyrell Cobb.
The decision has come under fire from Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington who accused the government of failing to listen to the community’s outrage over the sentence.
But Ms D’Ath said the decision was based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which thoroughly reviewed the sentence.
“It’s also important to remember that any appeal always comes with the risk that a sentence can be reduced.”
