POLICE are investigating the mysterious discovery of a woman’s body near a hostel in Surfers Paradise.

The body of the woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, was found around 7.30am yesterday near a worksite on a lower level of the Bunk Surfers Paradise hostel, in Beach Rd.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Ricardo, from Gold Coast CIB, said police had set up a crime scene and were investigating the cause of death.

It is believed the woman’s body may have been in the location for several weeks.

“We’ve got suspicions on who this person is, but until we notify next of kin and go down that path, we’re not really in a position to say much more than that,” he said.

“We haven’t been able to get in contact with any relatives or next of kin ... Until we firm up the identity, we don’t want to release too much information, as it might lead to speculation.”

Det Snr Sgt Ricardo said the body was discovered by construction staff when they arrived at work about 7.30am.

“There was nothing to suggest there’s been any robbery, everything seems normal,” he said.

He said police were reviewing CCTV footage of the area.

“We haven’t really found anything relevant yet but we are in the process of reviewing it to establish exactly what’s happened,” he said.

“If there are indications that there was movement outside the hostel then we’ll branch out to that but at this point we’re focusing solely on the movements inside the hostel.”

He said anyone with information was urged to contact police.

“Detectives have been on site for a few hours now, but if anyone has any information relating to anything suspicious in the area, or anything they think might be relevant ... like I said, it’s early days so we’re not really sure what we’re looking for,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
