GAMES BANNERS FINALLY FLYING HIGH ACROSS CITY

- DWAYNE GRANT

THE Commonwealth Games are almost here … and you only have to look up to realise it.

The first of almost 1000 GC2018 banners that will fly across the city in the lead-up to the Games have been installed at selected locations including Southport’s Nerang Street Mall and Main Beach’s Tedder Avenue and Waterways Drive.

The banners signal the start of what is expected to be a colourful build-up to the Games, with about 850 to be flying high before March.

They will replace the 275 pre-Games banners that have flown since before Christmas.

“Over coming weeks the Gold Coast will come alive with increasing branded signage and banners,” GOLDOC chief executive Mark Peters said.

“This marks an exciting time in the lead-up to GC2018 when the community will see visual signs of the celebration to come.”

The Bulletin last week highlighted a lack of GC2018 signage at venues such as Carrara’s Metricon Stadium.

A GOLDOC spokesman said at the time that comprehensive signage was traditionally installed closer to the start of a Games to ensure the look is “fresh, new and bright”.

Other signage already seen across the city includes GC2018-branded bus shelters, billboards and shopping centre billboards, a Borobi-branded tram and countdown clocks in Surfers Paradise and Gold Coast Airport.

The airport arrivals area also features Games signage, while the GC2018 Superstore has recently risen beside the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach.
