Zane’s hot for shot at Super2

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

ZANE Goddard always dreamt of having a crack at Australia’s premier motorsport category.

After spending the past two years in Europe, the Gold Coaster has returned Down Under to pursue a Supercars career, signing with Brad Jones Racing to drive a Commodore in the second-tier Super2 series.

Goddard’s eyes had been fixed on Formula One but he told the Bulletin that Supercars had forever been high on his agenda.

“Obviously Formula One is a big goal that I wanted to make but I think even if I did make it to Formula One, I’d also want to do Supercars at some stage in some way, shape or form,” he said, with James Courtney among his idols.

Goddard, 18, enjoyed his two test days with the Albury-based BJR squad last year and is hoping to learn plenty from their lead drivers Tim Slade and Nick Percat.

“It’s good to be in a team that does the main game as well as the Super2 for that exact reason,” he said.

“Just learning from their experiences, getting some knowledge off them is definitely beneficial.”

The teenager last year raced in the highly competitive Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 – the same series that Erebus Motorsport recruit Anton De Pasquale contested in 2015 before making a successful transition to the Supercars pathway.

“It’s pretty reassuring for myself to see that,” Goddard said of De Pasquale’s rapid rise.

“Obviously Formula Renault put him in good stead because it is a very difficult championship. You learn so much to get those little bits out of the car … hopefully when I jump in the car I can do the same thing.”

Goddard, who will remain based on the Coast, said he did not yet have a target time frame in mind to graduate into the main series.

OBVIOUSLY FORMULA RENAULT PUT HIM (ANTON DEPASQUALE) IN GOOD STEAD … IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT CHAMPIONSHIP ZANE GODDARD
