McEvoy has sparkling line-up for Diamond

- MICHAEL MANLEY

TONY McEvoy believes he’s never had a stronger hand as he chases his first Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Although Lindsay Park’s Long Leaf firmed into outright favouritism at $7 with Ladbrokes after drawing barrier seven, McEvoy was upbeat following yesterday’s draw.

He’s guaranteed three runners in the Group 1 Blue Diamond (1200m) with Run Naan ($18), Oohood ($8) and Kinky Boom ($9) but he also has two emergencies, with Aristocratic Miss ($101) and Roobena ($101).

Kinky Boom drew barrier 14, Oohood 10 and Run Naan two. Aristocratic Miss drew 17 and Roobena 13.

McEvoy described Oohood as possibly being the best of his squad but he said little separated them.

“It’s a very winnable Blue Diamond. I’m so happy to have three runners in the race as it shows our systems are working well,” said McEvoy, who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast with Sunlight in January.

“Oohood should be unbeaten going into the race and, if that was the case, she’d be favourite. She’s due for a bit of luck. I honestly believe she’s the filly to beat.

“There’s not a horse in my stable doing better. She’s right in the zone and barrier 10 is ideal for her as she can get cover.”

McEvoy described Run Naan as “the sleeper” of his trio as he’s had the advantage of being able to peak him on Saturday because he was guaranteed a run in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

“I’ve screwed him right down this week and I’ve put blinkers on him,” McEvoy said.

“He’ll get a beautiful run from his draw. He’ll settle in behind them and if he gets the gaps, he’s up to winning.”

Long Leaf is one of four runners for David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, who won last year with Catchy.
